William Shane Waring — 1981-2005

William Shane Waring passed away at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital after a brief illness, on Sunday, March 27, 2005, at the age of 24 years.
Shane is the beloved son of Marciele and Dan Simard of Fort Macleod. Shane was born in Fort Macleod on March 16, 1981 and was special from the day he was born.
Shane’s battle with two brain tumours left him mentally and physically disabled. Despite the hardships over the years, Shane still enjoyed the little things in life. They brought a smile to his face, especially seeing things like cows and “chickens” (Shane considered all birds’ chickens). He also loved noisy toys, kids, food from “Donalds” and loved his “Tic Tac Taz” toy.
Shane loved to give hugs and kisses, and his eyes would light up every time he saw his Grandpa, Uncle Henry, Uncle Todd or cousin Jacky, when any of them would walk into the room and talk to him. He was especially fond of his brother Cole egging him on and into trouble.
He was thought of as a little boy, never as an adult, because of his child like innocence. We have comfort in the knowledge that his hardships are over and that he is walking, running and chasing his great Auntie Dove around, with Gerrit (who would be turning up his nose) and Aunty Toots watching on telling them to settle down.
Shane is survived by his loving parents Marciele and Dan Simard and by his younger brother Cole Waring. He is also survived by his grandparents Jim and Dawn Caughlin of Fort Macleod; his great grandma Annis Caughlin of Abernathy, Sask.; his Aunty Shannon and Uncle Henry and cousins: Hank, Ros, Jacky, Janice and Jordan Van Hierden of Fort Macleod; his uncle Todd (Joella) Caughlin of San Antonio, Texas and by other relatives.
Shane was predeceased by his great grandpa Henry Caughlin, his special great aunts Theresa Wheeler (Dove) and Althea Jordan (Toots) and by his cousin Gerrit Van Hierden.
A memorial service will be held at Eden’s Funeral Home, Fort Macleod on Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Shane’s memory to Southern Alberta Community Living Association, 401 21A St.N., Lethbridge, Alta. T1H 6L6.

Kay Materi — 1919-2005

Kay Materi passed away peacefully at the Self Care Unit in Fort Macleod on March 27, 2005, at the age of 85 years.
The middle of 11 children, Katherine (Katie) was born at Revenue, Sask. on Nov. 24, 1919, to John and AnnaMarie Usselman. In 1940 she married Balzer Materi and they moved to Prelate, Sask. where they farmed for many years.
She moved to Saskatoon in 1967 where she operated a daycare in her home to the delight of all the children who knew her as “Auntie Kay.” She came to Fort Macleod in 1980 and became the owner/operator of “Kome Kleen Launderette” for a number of years. Following that, she sold her baking in Standoff right up until her stroke 18 months ago. A highlight for her was a phone call from Walter Gretzky with words of encouragement.
Kay is survived by five children, Valeria (Andy) Salonen of St. George, Ont., Mervyn (Ada) Materi of Medicine Hat, Bernadette (Dave) McNab of Fort Macleod, Dale Materi (Peggy), Annette Materi (Wade) of Saskatoon, Sask.; 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; her sister Fran Langen; sister-in-law Rose Usselman; brother-in-law Tom Reis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was many things to many people. Her family knew that they were always the most important people in her life. We will all remember her as a generous woman with a remarkably positive attitude, a bubbly personality and a tremendous sense of humour, always ready to lend a hand or have a song and dance. She was a person who lived out her faith life, loving people and accepting them with unconditional love. She had a “love of life” that was infectious and lived every moment like it was her last.
We will miss her hugs.
A funeral mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2816 Third Ave., Fort Macleod on Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at 2 p.m. with Father Maurice Joly officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery.

Gwendoline May Taylor — 1902-2004

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gwen Taylor. Aunt Gwen died on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at the age of 102. A quiet service of prayer was held on Dec. 5 to celebrate her life.
She was born Gwendoline May Taylor on July 27, 1902, in Dorset, England to William and Melinda Taylor. Gwen was the eldest of three children, her sister, Marion Swinarton of Fort Macleod and one brother, George Taylor, previously deceased.
Gwen immigrated to Canada in early 1911 with her parents and baby sister. Gwen remembered the trip over to Canada via ship and often talked of that journey and how it was shortly before the Titanic had sailed.
The Taylor family settled in Medicine Hat where Gwen received most of her schooling and later graduated from Alexandria high school. Her father was employed with the CP Rail and was later transferred to Calgary with his family.
It was here in Calgary that Gwen began her work as a bookkeeper in the insurance industry and then was later employed by an accounting firm, D.J. Grier and Associates, (owned by Dave Grier, originally from Fort Macleod).
Gwen enjoyed her work and continued with her accounting position well into what most of us would think of as our retirement years. She even filed her own income tax return up until the age of 100 years, at which time her family jokingly expressed “that after that many years, one shouldn’t still have to owe the government any more.”
Gwen never did apply for a driver’s licence. She always took the street car to work then later the public transit bus which of course would require lots of walking between stops.
Gwen moved to Fort Macleod in 1983 following her retirement from the accounting firm of D.J. Grier and Associates at the age of 81 years. After moving to Fort Macleod she certainly never saw the need for a driver’s licence or car as she could walk any place she needed to go.
Gwen valued her health and took great care to stay active and independent, maintaining her good health. She lived in and maintained her own home until the age of 96, at which time she moved to the Pioneer Lodge. Her memory remained very sharp; she was always great company as she had many memories to share.
Gwen enjoyed many travels to Europe, Scandinavia, Turkey and Greece and traveled to her homeland many times to visit her cousins.
She had a fine eye for artwork and in her retirement tried her hand out and joined the local Pottery Club. She enjoyed her garden very much, especially the birds which visited. And of course anyone who knew Gwen would also know how much she loved bears and the collection which surrounded her. She was a great lover of animals and had adopted and sponsored the Grey Wolves at the Calgary Zoo for many years up until her passing.
Gwen will be sadly missed by her sister Marion Swinarton and her three nephews, Dwight (Donna) Taylor and daughters, Vicki and Elizabeth, all of Rimbey, Charlie Reach of Fort Macleod, his daughter Susan Reach and her son Colton, both of Calgary, and Robert (Eileen) Reach, their sons Brian (Ronda), children Randi and Jason Perry of Medicine Hat and Nicholas and Ashley and Scot (Bev) Reach and their sons, Brenton and Braydon, all of Lethbridge.

Francis Paul McTighe — 1929-2004

Francis Paul McTighe passed away Monday, Nov. 8 in the Tom Baker Cancer Centre just 10 days shy of his 75th birthday after a brief, intense battle with lung cancer.
Frank was born in Calgary in 1929 to Imelda and Patrick McTighe. Frank spoke lovingly of a childhood in the Bridgeland-Riverside district spent playing hockey and baseball, fishing with his father and brothers, swimming in the Bow and Elbow rivers, and hanging out with friends.
Frank was blessed with an incredible work ethic, which saw him out hustling on the streets of Calgary at an early age, selling newspapers and shining shoes. After a broken leg kept Frank out of school for several months, he ended his formal education in Grade 6 and went to work, taking on several jobs before being hired at the age of 16 by Gallelli Construction Ltd., where he would fashion his first career.
Frank started out as a labourer and quickly progressed to more responsible positions in the company, eventually becoming one of just five or six dragline operators in the city. Frank’s skill at operating the huge machine would draw crowds to watch as he dug basements for houses and such larger buildings as the Highlander Hotel and Central United Church. Later he ran the dragline in gravel pits as the company built many of the early highways in Alberta.
Along with other men of his generation, Frank worked tirelessly to build Gallelli Construction Ltd. into a major company which eventually sold to Canada LaFarge, rising to the position of general superintendent.
Then, showing that same entrepreneurial spirit he exhibited as a boy selling newspapers and shining shoes, Frank left the construction industry to establish his own lawn care and snow removal business. Frank’s Lawn Care became a success, as the owner’s dedication and attention to detail earned the respect and loyalty of customers, many of whom retained Frank’s services for more than two decades. Frank continued to work full-time until the cancer that would eventually take his life forced him to stop working in August.
Frank was an avid sports fan, a passion which he passed on to his son by building a hockey rink each winter in the back yard of their home and coaching hockey in the Triwood Community Association, one year leading his team to the Calgary Minor Hockey Week tournament championship. Later in life Frank maintained his interest in sports by becoming the biggest fan of his grandsons, attending as many of their hockey, baseball, basketball or football games as possible. He also followed closely the fortunes of the Calgary Stampeders, Calgary Flames and Toronto Blue Jays.
Frank had an iron will. Realizing he was an alcoholic quit drinking and later, at the urging of his brother Ebby, joined Alcoholics Anonymous. Frank became a fixture at AA meetings, which he often chaired, enjoying the fellowship and the chance to help others find the sobriety he enjoyed for 28 years. A year after he quit drinking, Frank smoked his last cigarette and quit a two pack a day habit cold turkey.
Throughout his life Frank was popular and well-liked. He had an endless repertoire of stories and jokes, and a caring and compassionate nature that drew people to him.
Francis Paul McTighe is survived by: his son Frank and his wife Emily and their sons Ryan, Danny and Michael; his daughter Cheryl Lockerbie and her son Scott; the mother of his children Susan McTighe; his brother Ebby; his foster brother Larry; his sisters Theresa and Elaine; numerous nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.
Frank was predeceased by his father Patrick; his mother Imelda; his brothers Lou, Jock, Garret and Mickey; his sisters Pat, Ruth and Imelda; his son-in-law David Lockerbie; and his grandson Matthew Lockerbie.
A celebration of Frank’s life was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Foster’s Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in Queen’s Park Cemetery.

Beatrice Hedegaard — 1913-2004

It is with great sadness, yet gentle relief, that we announce the passing of our mother, Beatrice Verdella Hedegaard, at Fort Macleod on Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at the age of 91 years.
Bea struggled to maintain her dignity and cheerfulness through her long illness. Her strong faith helped her during this difficult time.
Beatrice was born on March 26, 1913, in New Dundee, Ont., to Isaac and Eliza Ann Spreeman, the youngest of nine children. Her family moved to Drumheller when she was five years old.
Throughout her teenage years, she was active in the Salvation Army. She attended Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, and in anticipation of serving as a missionary in Nigeria, she completed her nurses training in Toronto.
Due to a serious illness, she altered her plans. Bea returned to Alberta and became a Ministering Sister in the Missionary Church. She continued working with the church and nursing. She felt very privileged to work at the former Buelah Home in Edmonton, for unmarried mothers.
Beatrice met and married Christian Hedegaard, a minister, in 1943. Together they served in churches at Bingley, Mountain View and James River. They spent a year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, followed by a year in Didsbury, where Bea nursed at the hospital.
In 1956 they moved to minister in Denmark, Chris’ native land. They returned to Canada in 1961 and served as pastors in Athabasca and Mountain View. After they retired from the ministry, they moved to Red Deer where Bea continued to nurse for the next 10 years.
Bea led a colourful, busy life. She was involved with the WCTU, PTA and Women’s Missionary Society. She was a loving wife and mother, a doting grandma and a good friend. She was an excellent nurse and a vibrant public speaker. There are many happy memories.
Bea was predeceased by Chris in 1988. She leaves to remember her, their son John and his wife Sarah of Orlando, Florida; their daughter Linda Ellis and her husband Jack of Fort Macleod; granddaughter Terrah Lindsay and husband Don of Grande Prairie; granddaughter Trudi Mason and her husband Adam of Lethbridge; and grandson Tyler Ellis and Christine of Fort Macleod. She also leaves five great grandchildren: Kianna, Kiera, David, Eli and Isaiah.
A memorial service to celebrate Bea’s life will be held at the CrossRoads Missionary Church, Red Deer on Friday, Nov. 26, 2004.
If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Bea’s memory to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the CNIB.

Randy Grant Van Hierden — 1984-2004

Randy Grant Van Hierden, beloved son of Conrad and Rhonda Van Hierden of Fort Macleod, passed away at the Calgary Foothills Hospital on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at the age of 20 years.
Randy was born March 2, 1984, in Lethbridge. He loved living on the farm, feeding calves and teaching his beautiful Golden Retrievers to obey and listen to him.
Randy had a great love for all the A-T children and their families that he had met. He never let Ataxia Telangiectasia change how he looked at life and by the grace of the Lord he could show his love to so many, by his smile or his sincere love for life, especially to his siblings and dear friends: Daniel, Ben, Willyanne, Mary Joan and Aunt Alice and Uncle Bill.
Randy always had an encouraging comment, smile or would say, “I know that already,” or he would give you a thumbs-up if he agreed with you or when you were leaving. He loved being read to, as A-T would not always allow him to read himself, taking his friends on quad rides or just listening to their stories.
With the help of Mary Joan he learned every psalter and bible text for school and if he was not able to go to school, she came to the farm, where he found ways to tour her around.
The last years, Randy liked the trips he went on with his family or being out in the fields when we were harvesting.
He missed his dear sister Rebecca and was comforted when his breath would no longer come, that she would be waiting for him, this only by the Grace of the Lord.
Randy is survived by his parents: Conrad and Rhonda Van Hierden (Van Rootselaar); his siblings, Katie, Jennifer and David; his grandparents, Bert and Effie Van Rootselaar; his Oma Jans Van Hierden; Uncle Bill and Aunt Rita Van Rootselaar and family; Aunt Alice and Uncle Marty Van Driesten and family; Aunt Steina and Uncle Frans Feyter and family; Uncle Gerrit and Aunt Janet Van Hierden and family; Aunt Ria and Uncle Ray Vanee and family; Aunt Nancy and Uncle Walter van den Broek and family; Uncle Henry and Aunt Shannon Van Hierden and family; Uncle Harvey and Aunt Bernita Van Hierden and family; Aunt Tracey and Neil Websdale and family and Aunt Jenny and Uncle Jake Boot and family.
Randy was predeceased by his Opa Henk Van Hierden, his Uncle Rick Van Hierden, his cousin Gerrit Van Hierden and by his sister Rebecca Van Hierden.

Bertha Stewart — 1912-2004

A memorial service for lifetime Fort Macleod resident, Bertha Stewart who passed away on Oct. 19 at the age of 92, was held Oct. 22 in Christ Church, Anglican.
Rev. Noel Wygiera and Rev. Ernie Doyle officiated at the service. Carole Cressman was the organist for the congregational singing of hymns. Bertha’s sons-in-law, Jack Cahoon and Bill Haydamack, presented the eulogy and special remembrance remarks.
Born in Fort Macleod on June 19, 1912, Bertha received her education there. Following high school, she studied to be a beautician and worked in Fort Macleod. In the early 1930s, Bertha met Orwell Stewart at the Fort Macleod Curling Rink, and they were married on July 21, 1935.
Bertha was very active in community affairs and sports. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge for 50 years, as well as Past Guardian of Job’s Daughters. Playing bridge was one of her greatest pleasures and she played with the same group of ladies for 50 years. The “broomball” bridge club members originally played broomball in the arena. As the ladies matured, they changed from broomball to bridge.
One of Bertha’s greatest thrills was a six-month trip around the world in 1963. She loved to talk about the trip, and she had many exciting stories to tell of her experiences throughout the many different countries.
Very active in curling, Bertha won many southern Alberta bonspiels, including the Southern Alberta Ladies Provincial Championship in 1951. In 1974, Bertha became an honorary life member of the Fort Macleod Curling Club and had the honor of throwing the first curling rock at the Centennial Provincial Playdowns in Fort Macleod.
Golfing was also a passion for Bertha. As a teenager she got up early and walked to the golf course to play nine holes before going to school. She won many ladies tournaments in southern Alberta, including the Waterton Lakes Ladies Tournament four times.
In 1985, Bertha received an honorary lifetime membership to the Fort Macleod Golf Club, and she was the last original member of the club. A hole-in-one on the 144-yard fourth hole in Fort Macleod on Aug. 22, 1982 was a real thrill for her. As a participant in the golf events of the Southern Alberta Summer Games, Bertha won five gold medals.
As a young woman, Bertha excelled as a tennis and badminton player. She and her badminton partner, Lillian McLean, were a force to deal with. Bertha fired a score of 395 in five-pin bowling at the Owen Bohne Alley. The score was the highest score ever made in Fort Macleod in league play by either a woman or a man.

Rod Moses — 1916-2004

Rod Moses, a long-time resident of Fort Macleod, passed away in Lethbridge Regional Hospital on Jan. 24, 2004. Born in Dummer, Sask. in 1916, Rod had just celebrated his 88th birthday with family.
There will be a remembrance service held at the United Church Hall on Monday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m., giving friends and family an opportunity to gather, remember and celebrate Rod’s life.
Rod was known to most of Fort Macleod’s citizens during his working days as he was the long-time manager of the Alberta Liquor Control Board (ALCB) store. Rod was No. 2 on employee seniority list when he retired having worked 40-plus years for the ALCB. As with most small town business managers, Rod was involved with many of the town’s charitable and service organizations. A long-time Rotarian, Legionnaire and Mason, Rod worked hard at helping where he could.
Rod was predeceased by Blanche Moses, his loving wife of 59 years, and always-positive daughter Kathryn Ann Bokor.
Rod is survived and will always be fondly remembered by his son Jim Moses; daughter-in-law Marilyn Moses; niece Donna (Keith) Crawford; brother Ralph Moses (last surviving sibling of five); grandchildren April Moses-Campbell, Angela Rayner, Michelle Moses, Suzanne Stearns, Renee Herter; seven great-grandchildren as well as Jacko Bokor and many other family members and friends.
Rod was not much of a social butterfly but enjoyed family and friends in bite-sized pieces. He was from the old school where a penny saved was a penny earned. And while he didn’t end up with that many pennies, he sure didn’t spend much — on material things at least (much more went to support and further family members).
He built a small repair shop onto his house and would spend hours fixing the things he had. He was gifted with the ability to “sign write” that is now a lost art with the development of computer graphics. It was his second job for many years and many of the older building signs and billboards are his handiwork. He took up painting landscapes later in life and many are still enjoyed by family members. Rod and Blanche enjoyed their retirement. Going to Nevada was a regular occurrence when they were in their 70s.
Jim, Suzanne and Renee would like to say a special thanks to:
• Donna Crawford for looking after Rod’s immediate needs and visiting him regularly.
• Those who live locally and gave a helping hand (Phil and Eileen Moses, Brent and Jean Nelson, Bob and Linda Ripley, Jean Swihart and others).
• Angela O’Connor and other Home Care staff.
• Staff and residents of the Pioneer Lodge for all the love, caring and assistance they afforded Rod.
• His medical support — Dr. Wildeboer, Dr. David, Dr. Wild and Dr. Holland
Rod — Be well and may God Bless and say hi to Kathy and Blanche for us.
